Teenie Travels Around the World
on chschen's travel map.
Hotel Monte Carlo, Mexico City. I was here, in this hotel, 7 1/2 years ago. It seems longer. I don't know that diffident, teary girl anymore.
We walked around the Zocalo area today, hunting food and watching the parade of zombie-dressed people. Some of the gore-plastered faces looked so realistic I almost felt sick a few times. Two pairs of girls requested pictures with us. We smiled obligingly into the blank rectangles of their iPhones. Funny, we weren't the ones in costume.
Today is the first day of truly being on our own. The other times were trials, false starts--a caged bird making its first few tentative hops outside. As always, I am inordinately pleased by our trivial victories--finding Hotel Monte Carlo and booking our room, managing to cheaply but satisfactorily feed ourselves, wandering around without getting lost. I haven't the confidence or optimism of other travelers--leaving always causes a bit of anxiety, but it is a helpful, pushy sort of anxiety.
