Day 5 and the Exhaustion Continues

The highlands are getting higher

Pebbly little burn

The cairn marks the spot

It's all green sheep pasture

Lush, though

Day 4 of the WHW, Falling Apart

Not so many pictures today because we are dead tired (and possibly fighting).

Where we wild-camped last night because we got too tired to go on.

It wasn't the smoothest spot.

large_P7119034.jpg
There's the hut where we could have stayed, but we liked our spot better anyway.

large_P7119035.jpg
Yup, the lake's still there

large_P7119040.jpg
And so are those highlands and ferns

Is It Really Only Day 3?

large_P7109008.jpg
Our first overcast day since we started hiking

large_P7109010.jpg
Nice peaceful forest walk

large_P7109012.jpg
Fairies must live here...

large_P7109014.jpg
...in this enchanted forest, no?

large_P7109018.jpg
Lovely ferns, right? Full of ticks!

large_P7109021.jpg
But I think the moss is safe

Loch Lomond, our eternal hiking companion

large_P7109026.jpg
And now the sun is back out!

West Highland Way

large_P7098976.jpg
And we're off (with some new friends)!

large_P7098977.jpg
A well-deserved rest

large_P7098980.jpg
We separate from the others and take the Conic Hill scenic detour

large_P7098981-edited.jpg
I'm not looking forward to the extra climb, though

large_P7098987.jpg
We're rewarded some nice views of Loch Lomond

large_P7098991.jpg
But it's hard work going up hill with a "rucksack"

large_P7098996.jpg
All in a day's work

large_P7099001.jpg
The blue of Loch Lomond is intense

large_P7099002.jpg
And now for the descent

large_P7099004.jpg
I'm glad I have my trusty sticks

Exhausted. Gotten to the point where I don't remember why I do this and am dreading tomorrow's hard work. Tonight we sleep lakeside, but the place is crowded and hasn't the peace of a lake idyll. I suddenly recall how Jason told me once he would really like to visit an alpine lake. When I asked him why, he responded that he had read somewhere how they were a unique or rare ecosystem. Suddenly it strikes me how much Jason is a boy in search of a good story. There's something sweet and vulnerable about that.

Chris has gotten us into the habit of sleeping without the rain fly at night. When I look up I see the curly tendrils of young tree branches--infinitely lovelier than a bright orange screen. It reminds me of how he used to insist we sleep in the van when it rained, so we could hear the pinging on the car roof. I always protested because I disliked waking up to a stream of students passing by our windows and possibly peering in, but now I'm glad and hopes he always forces me into these little odd behaviors so that I may experience life a little differently, if only in these small ways.

Something in here smells like wet dog, but it's impossible to tell what because the scent keeps escaping like a fuzzy memory that refuses to clarify.

It seems a lifetime ago that we started on this hiking trip.

Sticky People

Leaving our lovely, quiet campsite

large_P7088969.jpg
And we embark on the West Highland Way!

large_P7088970.jpg
Are we lost already?

large_P7088972.jpg
Ready, set...

large_P7088973.jpg
So many shades of green!

We meet people who have come to Scotland just for this--hiking the West Highland Way. Swiss. Germans. Another slice of humanity--not the backpacker, not the tour group member, not the handful of friends looking to devour the city together. Some adventurous-minded working people. Normal but not quite square. Let us say curved at the corners. A comfortable bunch so far, the little group made here--casually, fleetingly. Will any of them stick?
